"The proof is in the pudding" is a shortened version of:
"The proof of the pudding is in the eating"

Meaning you must taste it to know if it is good.  Similar to "You cannot judge a book by the cover."

Pudding often has things in it. Fruits, cookies, candies, etc.

Er, um, I hope you know that I’m just joking around with the question, right?

I don't eat pudding, so I don't know if it is telling the truth or not.

  • There is a dessert called "floating island" which is pudding with meringue floating on top.  I would love to eat that.
