I see nothing wrong with supporting their legal rights . your not supporting their wrong doings and it's important to understand we are all capable of doing bad things if pushed too far but it doesn't mean we are bad people.
I've often encountered people who assume that because I support a prisoner and or felons Constitutionally mandated right to vote be recognised. That I myself must be a felon.
I worked on campaigns through an organization for prisoner's rights that I was a member of for many years. If that taints me with criminality in people's eyes, that is their problem, not mine. It does, however, showcase their ignorance and shortsightedness. Many things that affect prisoners also have a great deal of impact on their families. Familial support is vital not just to the prisoners, but to society as well, because prisoners with strong family support have a lower recidivism rate. Additionally, people should realize that while prison is intended to be punishment, that is achieved through the loss of their freedom, rights and privacy while they complete their sentences. If we, as a society, do not care about how prisoners are treated during their incarceration, we will pay for that when they are released back into society...and with few exceptions they are released at some point.
