You deserved it for taking the sparklers into the barn, long before you decided to roast the feathers of the poor chicken.

    When I was older all the above applied and so did sneaking out and drinking, as well as skipping my diabetic meds, and hiding junk food from my parents.

My husband does not spank my child (nor do I but that isn't the point) my husband doesn't so much as ground my son or send him to his room, it isn't his place to do so. If my son needs to be  punished I will take care of it myself.

I think if someone isn't a biological parent they should never use corporal punishment on a child. 
    I'm also iffy with stepparent's disciplining a stepchild in any form, but if the child is younger when the step-parent enters the child's life, it might be okay at some point of the step-parent to step up and parent including providing some sort of (non-corporal) punishment when needed. 
    My step-kids are in their teens, it's not my job to parent them, they have parents (2 great ones) I am not going to intrude into their lives that way. That doesn't mean I don't care about them, or that I don't provide for them when they are with us, it just means if a discipline issue comes up, I step out and let their father handle it.     I have no problem with littler kids snacking while shopping if they are small enough to sit in the shopping cart and need help opening things. I have no problem handing the cashier a opened bag of food to scan. The problem I have with the CVS incident you shared is the child obviously was old enough to not need to be snacking in the store, he defiantly opened the bag himself after being told no. If I tell my kid no, it's no if he were to defy me after being told no there would be consequences, of course, mine is past the age now, where he would behave like that (And he didn't at that age)

    I had a similar incident as your last example happen to, but I wasn't a little kid and it wasn't over a mess downstairs and my mom wasn't drunk but she was sure as heck furious with me,  I was already a teenager at the time and she woke me up and started whipping me, one of the times she worked nights (She did on some weekends) I jumped up to run, crashed my toe into my desk chair hurt like crazy, and she just tossed me over my bed and finished up the whipping,  yeah I cried myself back to sleep that night too.   less

I have never spanked my son, and he is very respectful to me and to any other adult that is an authority figure in his life the majority of the time it is rarer for him to need an attitude tweak than it was for me as a spanked child to need one. 
    I wasn't raised to use "sir" and "ma'am" when speaking to my parents. My best friend and her sister were raised to do just that. All adults in authority they would refer to as sir and ma'am, there were times it sounded forced and fake but people didn't hear that for the most part, they heard the words being said. They came from spanking homes as well, my best friend got nowhere near as much as her sister perhaps 1 for every 100 her sister got but both were subject to spanking for severe misbehavior I don't know if that motivated them to have that "respect" or not.

    My dad used to ask if I had ears when he would tell me not to do something/do something or to stop doing whatever without getting the response from me he wanted, and I used to respond with "No" Close to "Didn't hurt" and the end result was the same for those who uttered that phrase, I bet.   less

    I did lock myself in my room but came out when my mom told me it would be easier on me if I did. 

    I also ran away at 14 to avoid the unavoidable, but that didn't go over so well.

    I hid it from my parents for days, until my dad forced the truth out of me, and then he spanked me for being dishonest and sent me to my room for the entire day to wait for mom to come home and spank me for breaking the window. 
    When mom got home I had to tell them what happened. Neither believed me that it could happen the way it did and I was getting more and more upset, so finally mom said she believed me. (I could tell she really didn't but she could see how upset I was becoming) 
    Which made what happen an accident and therefore not a spankable offense but I did lose my pogoball for X amount of time as an added punishment for playing on it in the house after multiple warnings not to, but I didn't receive that second promised "Wait until your mother comes home" spanking.

    but everytime i done that, then i log out of similarworlds for a while,.. and when i log back, it says ' my acccount has been cancelled. reason: harrassing others'. so its always to redo again and so i give up.  less
