Why would anyone steal a lock, from an ice chest?

Why would someone steal the lock from a convenience store ice chest?  What would they possibly hope to accomplish by doing so?

They stole the lock? From an ice chest?

    Now that's just "cold"!

Probably just stuck it in their pocket after breaking it off to steal the ice inside.

If they stole it, they stole it in hopes of raiding the chest after hours.

It was already Free" the locks just lay on top of the ice chests until the stores lock them back up each night.

Nope, it was already off, they leave them on top of the ice chest all day until they get ready to close and then they lock them back. Has to be another reason.

I don't think that's it either, I'm pretty certain they'd be smart enough to know the store would just get another lock and lock it up.
