Adding a Video: Step-By-Step Written Instructions with Photos

  • A little birdy told me that the video tutorial we have on adding a video to posts goes too quickly to follow. I looked at it and realized I didn't even caption it or give any instructions beyond what's shown on film. Oops. I'll include that video at the end for those who prefer the video experience but will break down the process step by step with photos first for anyone who wants more clarification. If it still doesn't make sense, leave a message in the comments below or shoot me a message and I'll do what I can to help.

Step 1: Find Your Video on YouTube and Click "Share"

    Step 2: Click "Embed"

For unknown reasons, sometimes people have issues using the regular URL link (shown to the left of the word "copy" in this photo). That in mind, go with the "Embed" option the arrow is pointing to here. Click the "Embed" icon.

Step 3: Copy the Embed Code

The long code that appears is called an iframe. It's fancy magic that essentially creates a window on a webpage and shows YouTube through it. You must copy the whole block. You can do this by either highlighting all the text in the box and pressing "Ctrl" and "C" at the same time (that's a shortcut for copy and works almost everywhere) or simply by clicking the "Copy" button that the second arrow is pointing to.

Step 4: Return to answerMug and Click the "Insert/ Embed Video" Button on the Text Box

Click the button that looks like a filmstrip with a play button. It should say "Insert/ Edit Video" if you hover over it. As an alternative, you can click "Insert" from the toolbar menu and then select "Insert Video." (Method not shown.)

Step 5: Choose the "Embed" Tab

By default, the box opens to "General." This would be where you'd place the URL I mentioned in Step 2 if you were using that method. However, because it can be problematic sometimes, you'll need to choose the tab that says "Embed" instead.

Step 6: Paste the YouTube iframe Code in the Box

Click inside the box and press "Ctrl" with the letter "Z" (the shortcut for paste). Then click "Ok."
Side note: You won't have that funky green circle with the white arrow in it. That's from an extension I use in Chrome (Grammarly).

Step 7: Finish Your Post as Usual

Note the arrow in this picture is pointing to the cursor. You'll want to press enter once or twice if you're trying to add text below your video.

Step 8: Bliss Out to Coffeeshop Music :D

This is the video I used for my example. Good stuff.
