It all depended on the story line he was working on. If the story line arc ended the "characters" disappeared into an oblivion somewhere. I think the cartoon characters became aware of the power the cartoonist had over them. Imagine knowing whom your creator is and that he/she could uncreate you by simply not drawing you?
