Discussion»Questions»Television and Movies» I'm just watching an old 1996 Canidaian film called Fargo ...Do Canadians all say Yar so much in real life...A Question for Jamie me Think's
I was quite shocked at finding out it from an American state....does everyone talk like that there ? It's just so different and such a slow way of talking ,it also has no hint of an an American accent at all..more from Sweden or Norways based countries I would say...
Minnesota has a strong heritage of Swedes and Norwegians. You may have noted that the surnames of the people in the movie reflect that. Like I said, it is an exaggeration of our way of talking, and here in the less rural area the accent is hardly noticeable. Most native Minnesotans like myself do tend to use some of the expressions like 'Yah, you betcha' at times. Just like in the UK, there are many different American accents.
