What do you think will happen to our food chain?

  Some of the most devastating aspects of COVID19 I’ve seen are the images of food being wasted due to the lack of a customer base. Restaurant chains, schools, sports venues, caterers, etc. have shut down, so produce no longer moves through its normal channels. Hundreds or thousands of gallons of fresh milk being dumped into sewer drains because dairy farmers can’t sell their product before it spoils. Fresh fruits and vegetables either rot or are plowed under for the same reasons. Meat-product manufacturers also. As the food stops moving, their industries shut down next, causing even more unemployment than there already is. Even worse than all of the above, some people can’t get food at all, so while food rots or is dumped out, people who need it starve. 

Lose-lose all the way around.

It will have a few kinks in it for a bit.  However, with a bit of trial and error, any broken links will quickly be replaced with new ones and any kinks will be pulled tight.  It may look a bit different, but it will still function adequately. I have lived in the same area for 40 years and I have noticed 2 things starting to die off - frogs and snakes. Less frogs and snakes  = more insects and more slugs. More insects  and more slugs = bigger attacks on crops. Bigger attacks on crops = more poison being used to try to controll the insects and slugs. More poisons being used increases the chances of the insects and slugs building a resistant to the poisions. Right now I am worried about the soil in my area because it is starting to show damage from long term exposure to acid rain. Soil is the corner stone of the food chain because there is a lot of vital food chain insects and  micro organisms in it. I  like to think we can and we will save our food chain. Depends on where you live. There may be sputters where food is usually abundant, and even less availability where it typically isn’t. People in impoverished nations are in even worse trouble than before. 

It is stunning to see people scratching for something to eat in some places, while crops are bring plowed under in other places.  We can’t round up enough workers to harvest some crops and an impulsive xenophobe in the WH working to lock out foreigners who usually do it. 

I think food is still plentiful, but the process for harvesting and bring it to be processed is the problem.  It pains me to see food being destroyed rather than donated, but unless there is a way to get it to the people who need it, it rots.   If we aren't careful, we may all be fighting over roadkill before long.
