How did the phrase 'Why is it that...?' become 'How come...?'?

    I'm taking a guess that "How come?? became the short version of "How is it that [such and such] came to be?"  Much the way many words/phrases today have been shortened (as a result of texting?) such as "adorbs," "u r," "btw."
