The only parade I was ever in was the annual donation day parade when I was in elementary school (mandatory participation). Donation Day was a ritual the town set up in the 1800's to help people who were in need. Each year on Donation Day, everyone had to bring a can of food to school (kids, teachers, staff, etc.). Between 9:15 and 10, all the kids and teachers from all the schools in town (middle, kindergarten and elementary) slowly convened under the freeway. Then at 10, all the kids marched around town carrying a can, while townsfolk lined the streets to watch. The Parade ended back at the downtown school ½ hour later, where everyone dropped their can off into large boxes set up on tables in the auditorium. Then the kids from the outskirt schools walked back up to their schools, while the kids from downtown went back to class.
