Surprise, surprise! We woke up this morning to find our washing machine went supernova overnight, it flooded the laundry room!

It’s served us well over its 18-year lifetime.  I guess I’m not going anywhere today at least for the next few hours. Sigh.

About 18 months ago, the same thing happened with our water heater. It had put in about 25 years of service, because it was installed by a previous owner here.

Has anything like these two home disasters ever happened in your household?

"It" wasn't in the original post. Either "flooding" or "it flooded" is correct.

Yes, the same thing happened once with my water heater. A lot of water was all over the floor but not a huge, huge flood or anything.
I had to have the water heater replaced.
Within a few hours, it was replaced.

The bonus: the guy who did all the work was very nice. And not just in "that" way.   ;)

    I don't remember.

    Wait -- is this a tongue-in-cheek question? Ha! :)
I took your question literally -- and then I reread the last two sentence of my answer, ha!

Yes!! Ha!  I'm so dense, ha! I didn't even catch my wording on that!

(Nope, no discount. I wish! Ha.)

You were lucky to get 18 years. Modern appliances are built to last 5. (Source: appliance store manager) The only big disasters we had were two floods in the basement. The first one destroyed the carpet, but no appliances were damaged. This post was edited by Element 99 at June 12, 2020 9:53 AM MDT

Yeah, our area had a huge flood last summer. My appliances in the basement survived. About a foot of water all over entire basement. The water receded within a couple of hours. A huge amount of water concentrated in a little bit of time.

There were piles of destroyed carpet and furniture in front of many houses. After the second flood, the city rebuilt our street.

Wow. Glad it got worked out for everyone on your street.

There was nothing ever like the water in my basement (which tends to be on the 'damp' side) like this past summer. And me, that evening the weather got goofy - - on my way home from work, I drove through standing water on my road/street, just like one is told repeatedly not to do. Never had there been water like that on the street.

When I got home, I discovered the basement. It was an out-the-normal type of rain for sure. A good friend (who is incredibly mechanically inclined and smart) of mine came over that night and helped checked things out with me, too.
He came over -- after I (and this is stupid), standing in shin-high deep water -- unplugged my dehumidifier that was still running, despite being in standing water. Yeah, I got the strongest shock I've ever felt. I was completely OK. But that shock woke me up -- no wonder "they" run safety ads all the time -- so, just in case -- the point gets across into our minds. Because I've always intellectually known not to drive through standing deep water. And not to stand in water and touch, let alone unplug,  anything electric. But I did both of those that night.

My friend "reminded" me, too. Glad I'm here to share the story. But I'm embarrassed to admit to it, too.

I'm glad you're OK. Embarrassment is a good teacher.

You’re absolutely correct: everyone we spoke with about the water heater was amazed that it didn’t conk out after about 15 years. Now that I’m shopping for a new washing machine, I expect similar comments.

Our building doesn't permit washing machines in individual apartments.  We have a laundry room with washers and dryers.  The pipes are too old to handle the amount of water which would drain out of a washing machine.  I've never had any flooding in my apartment.
