My very first day in the south (the state of North Carolina), when I stopped at a gas station to ask for directions to the Marine Corps base, a man in his 60s or 70s called me “boy” as he answered me. I was about 25 years old at the time. It was quite a telling omen of how the next three years would eventually play out. I’ve always referred to that chapter of my life as my three-year sentence. When I received orders to transfer to San Diego at the end of those three years, I jumped on the opportunity with both feet.
