What are some bands or solo musical acts that are named after historical events or after the monikers of historic people? ~

The origins many of pop culture references are rooted in or around the decade in which they emerge, sometimes a few years before that decade, while others are take-offs of themes from far back in history, such as “Paul Revere and the Raiders” or “Jethro Tull” or  “The Dixie Chicks”.

54-40.  54-40 is a Vancouver BC band that took their name from the slogan 54-40 or fight back when US president James Polk wanted to expand the Oregon boundary into Canada. 54-40's song  One Gun is about how Canada didn't let that happen. Cheers!
