The little people never give up, never grow a brain. They keep on keeping on until it is physically impossible to earn a living any more, always demanding that their government "do something".
The officials always know that they don't have to actually do anything, they only have to maintain "reputation", whatever they take that to mean. They don't care if the whole world crashes and burns, as long as they can be on top all the way to the bottom.

The lion's share of the problem, I think, stems directly from the label. Implicit in the moniker 'little' people is the assumption that certain ones of us are more important, smarter and/or in some other way 'better' than others. The technical term for demonstrating the error of that assumption is called revolution.
And, IMO, we are WAY overdue for one! The "little people" will cease to be little when they start decorating their trees with bankers, lawyers, corporate CEO's, media moguls, movie stars and politicians.
No they won't. Every dominant culture eventually collapses, all in the same general way and for the same general reasons. The collapse is followed by a dark age (because they have forgotten how to write their history), and then they rebuild making all the same stupid mistakes all over again. You would think some of them would grow a brain and try something different, but they never do. They might knock about for a century or so, and then they create a centralized government and give it all power. Same as the one their grandfathers died to overthrow.
