I've never had one.  I never was interested in putting anything in/over my ears.  I'm still the same way.    I had transistor radios to listen to when out walking or sitting in the yard.  I had a tape player in my room and we had a console stereo in the living room.  I also had an electric radio in my room.  That was more than enough music makers.    Oh yeah, and we had a piano which I spent many many hours playing.

Bought one in the 1980s. I preferred the Boom Box, but like m2c, my parents didn't like much of what I listened to. With a few notable exceptions.
I was studying in my room (that I shared with 2 brothers), music on as usual to drown out the sound of playing, squabbling siblings. Mum comes into the room with an armful of clean laundry, and told me that she quite liked what I was listening to, for a change (Graceland).
I replied, "Do you recognise the voice? It's Paul Simon."
    "Paul who?"
Rolled my eyes so hard I saw my own retinas. "Really, Mum? Half of Simon and Garfunkel."
"Oh. That Simon. Good heavens, I didn't think he'd still be popular."
John(ny) Farnham released his comeback album a month later. I bought that, too - but Mum did say she preferred Sadie, the Cleaning Lady from his 60s catalogue. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at September 19, 2020 5:26 AM MDT
