Why do schools bother teaching anything but computer programming and medicine?

That's ALL THAT MATTERS.

Hmmm/. Not sure I'd want hospital treatment from one who might know an antacid from an anteater and how to code 1000 x 1000 matrix integrals in C++, but is otherwise uneducated!

I tried to teach them some reading, math and science... but all I got were blank stares. Most of the doctors at the hospital I go to are from the Mideast. They are quite well educated.

I'd hope all doctors are well-educated, irrespective of their origins....

    Yup.
While growing up, I sat outside, alone, in the school parking lot playing the piano.
And I was completed ignored by all inside the building.

I take it you decided against a career as a concert pianist? :-)

Ha! I like your take on my answer, Durdle!
    :)
My weak humor attempt was just to joke that all the new techie stuff probably cares not about music - -except those computer music programmers  . . . hmm . .  my answer may be way off.

Anyway, the funny thing is that though I'm not a concert pianist, I do get paid well to play the piano! Ha!
    :)
Thanks for replying to my answer. Your comment is the best thing about my answer. This post was edited by WelbyQuentin at October 16, 2016 1:10 PM MDT

Thank you WelbyQuentin! I realised your question was somewhat satirical, but I think you've a point that some computer types are very narrow-minded, and believe everything can be done by computer and from home!

Because not everybody likes to work with machines or take care of sick people.

And those are probably going to become dead-end jobs in the not too distant future.

Most "coding" will be done by the computers  themselves (or whatever they evolve into), just like humans are now "self-programming".

Medicine is likely the next field for "the moneyed" to target for destruction. Doctors are paid WAY too much in their eyes, especially surgeons. And given that a computer was able to more accurately and more quickly diagnose coronary issues in the ER over 20-years ago there's no reason not to move in that direction, other than the AMA.) Hence, systems like the daVinci robotic surgical system are probably recording every move the surgeon makes so that the next version can actually perform the surgery on its own with a much less costly surgical NP directly monitoring it and one surgeon overseeing all the routine activity in the OR suite. (They've already done that with anesthesiologists.) Nursing is already in that crapper with the average nurse outside major hospitals being paid in the range of $15 to $25/hour, with a four-year degree, and wildly varying work hours.

    HUH?  you're kidding, right?

I am appalled at the lack of knowledge that young people have about the most basic things concerning their finances; they use a credit card and that's it......what about financial planning being taught in schools? sure couldn't hurt!!!

and how about knowing how to be an intelligent consumer when it comes to buying food, clothing, etc.......how to eat to further your health........

I'd sure as hell hate to be in a world where all schoolkids learned what YOU think is important..........GOOD GRIEF.

and what about the arts, music, literature, even sports? (much as I dislike them, they are somewhat valuable)

I'm thinking you're just being a jackass with that question, but in case you WERE serious, I have given you my reply!!!!!!!!!

Superlative thought process.  I agree one- thousand percent.  They put the cart before the horse, meaning society.  They expect you to pick a career.  But based on WHAT?  What life lessons (which are the foundation of any career  choice) do we ever get?  NONE.  So we have a bachelor's and/or master's  in something FANCY,  and absolutely no idea what things cost in the real world including that silly education you need to survive.   No one even tells you that much.

SO, yes.  Right on there....... This post was edited by WM BARR . =ABSOLUTE TRASH at October 16, 2016 1:23 PM MDT
