I smile at everyone.  Because I am thinking of how I feel when someone smiles at me.  I like it.  So, I try and spread the goodwill to others.   (you should give it a whirl)

In Sonja Lyubomirsky's book The How of Happiness, she recommends smiliing at strangers as a way to increase one's happiness, both through facial feedback (people who force themselves to smile report greater happiness) and because it increases our perception of social connection, which also tends to make us feel happier.

Upon hearing this advice while listening to the audio version of Lyubomirsky's book, I decided to give it a try with the very next stranger I encountered.  The very next stranger I encountered had her face buried in her smart phone and didn't even notice my existence....;-D....
