A substantial shift in consumer attitudes, same as Australia. Western countries just can't compete with Asian sweatshops price-wise, we have laws about that sort of thing (fair wages, safe work practices, no enslaved children etc.) Ergo, stuff made locally will cost more. Consumers tend to think with their wallets. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at March 26, 2021 12:47 PM MDT

    Less taxes and regulation.

Tarriffs on countries who use slave labor. Or do not apply the same regulations that are applied to US businesses.

Slartiblast has it right that prices for consumer goods made in a country that pays its workers a decent wage will be higher, which means that the minimum wage in this country has to be more than $7.25 an hour.  Those are slave wages on which almost no one can live.  Americans also need to stop buying so much cheap crap that comes out of China.  Do we really need all those things?  One of my biggest pet peeves is the cost of an iPhone.  You pay $700+ this year and next year, they come out with a "new and improved" phone that costs $800.  Didn't your $700 phone do enough for you?  Your beautiful 95" flat screen TV will never last as long as my 35-year old 27" Zenith TV that still works perfectly.  If you can't see your picture clearly, you don't need HDTV - you need glasses!

Apple stops supporting older models. Planned obsolescence. My better half had an iPhone5 that worked perfectly - until it needed another software update after she'd had it several years. She had to get a new phone.

Exactly.  I bought an LG flip phone i 2011 and it's still working.  I need it to make calls and receive calls.  It does both.  I can also text if I don't mind going blind with those tiny letters on the buttons.  It doesn't take pictures.  Then, again, my camera doesn't have phone features.

No, I was just pointing out what could happen if you keep nit-picking. :)

Everyone already gave good serious responses, and I didn't want to repeat them.  So I decided to give a humorous response instead … and this was what came to mind.
