It was my mom's hometown! "Schenectady" is derived from a Mohawk word meaning "beyond the pines." There was a feature film with that title a few years ago that was set in the city.  Its motto is "the city that lights and hauls the world." It was famous as the home of General Electric, where my grandfather worked in the 1920s and 30s, and American Locomotive Works. It's also the home of Union College. Thank you for all the background information; you haven’t provided an answer about a nickname.
