How do you quiet your mind for meditation?

...Meditation is what quiets the mind.
The thinking mind never wants to stop. We can however place our awareness beyond the thoughts.
...one way to cut back on so many thoughts while we persue our daily
Activities is by being aware of our breath. That's it. Just be aware as it comes in and goes out. The random thoughts fade away when the focus
Is on the breath. They return when focus is lost.
...deeper meditation to quiet the mind is to focus on the light within you.
Eastern masters have taught this from the beginning of time.
For the west it was Jesus that
Told us that we could find the
Body full of light if we looked within.
    ...any way that's enlightenment...
    finding that light within.

I will have to try it again. I think it was one of your responses elsewhere that inspired this question.

    No idea.

I´ve never been able to do it.

Either, my mind is all over the place or I fall asleep.  No in-between  :-)

That's exactly my problem. I want to try again, though.

You practice.  You breathe.  Concentrate on breathing.  You let your thoughts float by and don't pay attention to them once you realize you are thinking again.  It is not a walk in the park until you learn how.

Once you learn how, you are empowered.  The reason being is because you have taught yourself to look at everything in a new light. IT is the best gift you can master because you truly need nothing if you do master it.

I am a slow learner and yet the benefits I have derived are priceless.

Try doing it for 5 seconds at a time, then 10 seconds.   Until that seems easy, then add more.  You don't try to do an hour the first day or you will never try it again.  It is just like regular exercise, but you don't get out of breath, you get out of focus if you try too hard.

    I love this one.

In a word... focus. Takes much focus.

I have never been able to when I have tried.  There are occassions, though, where it happens without conscious effort...perhaps when my mind has just had enough?

I merely think of grammar.  I find that it's not only useful  for calming me down, it also revs me up.

P.S.  The true answer is that I've never meditated in my entire life.
