Which first-term US president(s)* did NOT spend 4 years blaming every problem on the previous administration?

*Excluding George Washington (of course), and excluding those presidents who belonged to the same party as their immediate predecessors.

William Henry Harrison (he only lasted 31 days before he croaked).

Seriously... they ALL bickered and complained about the previous occupant.  (and it's not limited to the US)

How much do you want to bet that if he had not died and carried out his full term, he probably would have whined and cried about Martin van Buren during most of it.

That van Buren was nuttin' but a onary, honeyfuggled democrat!  Man alive!  Someone should have rowed him up Salt River.  (whew, it's hot in here)

Don't ask me - while I'm old, I'm not old enough to have known about Harrison or van Buren.  Truman was the president when I was born.

Yes, both Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Harry S Truman were both Democrats, so as I stated in the caveat that accompanies my question, it’s unlikely that there would have been a mood of criticism from the latter in regard to the former.

Not only that, but back in the day, former presidents didn't speak badly about their successors.  It was deemed unseemly.  It remained that way for a long time until more recently. This post was edited by SpunkySenior at April 23, 2021 11:32 PM MDT

Well, I’ve uncovered some pretty saucy back-and-forth of comments they made in news reports and speeches. Some of it was just as cutthroat as what we hear today in 2021.

That's true, but when push came to shove, most of the time, they managed to come to some agreement.  Today, they're each opposed to anything the other wants and neither side is willing to give an inch.

Your assessment sums it up perfectly,  I agree wholeheartedly with you.

It used to be that these politicians were friends outside of the office.  They would meet for dinner and hash something out and a deal was struck.  No longer.
