  • I pay cash for most purchases.  However, I use my credit cards for purchases of 100 dollars or more

Under $25, I usually pay cash. Over that, I use my credit card.

I have been using a credit card for pretty much all purchases for several years due to the great cash-back benefit. I pay it in full each month and have a good record of my expenditures.   This year I started using cash for some of the in-person transactions.

“Hello, Randy D? It’s me, Shuhak. Yes, again. Listen, I’m in a bit of a jam . . . yes, again. I’m calling you from . . . yes, again. How did you guess? You get it right every time. What’s that? Never mind how it happened, I swear it’s not my fault this time, they’ve made a horrible error and I plan to sue them for every red . . . yes, again. Anyway, as I was trying to say before you so rudely keep interrupting me, I was wondering if you could . . . yes, again. Oh, the usual amount.  I promise to pay you back as SOON as possible. Yes, again. What are you, some kind of broken record?”

    It depends what it is.

If it is very expensive (so very rare) I might use my credit-card. I ought use it a few more times to keep it active!

    Club subscriptions: cheque or bank-transfer.

Many day-to-day purchases (food mainly, some household DIY materials, occasional mail-orders): debit card.

Also food, newspapers, and the like: I often use cash.

    '

Petrol: my nearest filling-station offers pay-at-pump by card-reader on the machine, or pay in the shop. Generally I use the card-reader and debit-card, so do not need join (so add to) the shop queue.

The first time I used it I must admit I felt rather nervous and guilty as I drove away, because not only was the pump self-service as usual anyway, but no member of staff had been involved at all as I had not set foot in the shop!  (I can't recall where and when I was last served by a pump operator.)

    '
Pub drinks: cash. Unless also with a full meal when I then pay at the end, using my card kept for the duration behind the bar.

Ad-hoc small-value payments in club tea-boats, coffee-mornings, road-side refreshment stalls, domations-boxes, etc.: cash. Such things cannot be expected to be by card.

    Christmas-present money to relatives: cheque.
