We could disagree with orders and even discuss them in private with those who give the orders. We carried on anyway and complied. I was never ordered to do anything illegal or stupid.

    Hello Rosie:

The military issues some strange orders, that's for sure...  So, there I was, sitting down in my cleaning station when my chief walked through..  He YELLED at me for not doing anything..  So, I said, "Chief, I just painted this wall (bulkhead) and I'm waiting for the paint to dry so I can chip it off and paint it again."  That's a joke..

But, here a real story..  Some conditions of the sea REQUIRES that one NOT venture out to the weather decks..  We were IN one of those conditions, when Lt. JG Rue ordered me to empty the trash cans off the fantail.  So, I DID, and almost died.  When I got back to CIC, I came down on him like a ton of bricks..  Didn't get written up for it, either..

So you almost weren't here? Whoa excon!. That's heavy! Did the a-hole apologize for jeopardizing your life or did he just  sit there like a schm**k silently? He should have gotten written up for it in my opinion at the very least and maybe demoted to boot. He dam* near killed you!  Thank you for sharing that hairy close-call and Happy Friday!  :)

When I was at rank of 'able seaman ' I came to do some work in a space (on the ship) where there was a leading seaman talking with an officer. I knew the LS to be a bit of an idiot but anyway he gave me some bit of a stupid oder to do something just to show off his 'authority ' to the officer. I said to him "why don't you just f*** off". That could have been a serious charge.  He said "i'm a leading seaman -you can't tell me  to f*** off!". I said "well don't f*** off then.
Nothing happened because the officer knew he was just beIng an idiot.

In the Navy we disagree with orders all the time during peacetime but usually do what we are told anyway

Lucky you!  Good for you for speaking up! I couldn't do it. I'd be booted so fast. Following orders that seem stupid or make no sense is not something I could probably do. Although never have been in that situation I honestly don't know. Thank you for your reply Kg and Happy Friday to thee! :)
