When you're in the military, I know following orders is crutial, no matter what.

However, what about a scenario where a soldier was given an order and for whatever reason he went against the order but in doing so he saved the lives of the men in his company.  Would he be punished or rewarded?

It has happened a few times. It usually ends up with a Medal of Honor being awarded.

Soldiers are not required to follow unlawful orders, so I guess it would depend on the order itself.

Military personnel, especially since the Vietnam era, are well educated in the fact they do not have to follow unlawful orders. As a matter of fact, if I remember correctly, several members of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff have publicly declared they have personally reviewed the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and will not enforce any unlawful orders passed down from the White House.
