    They are still researching it to confirm it is an ancient sponge. It will be the oldest so far.

    So much has happened to the Earth over its life so far that finding really ancient fossils is very much a matter of good fortune.

    Remember though that the land-masses we call Canada, the Middle East, Europe, etc., and the intervening oceans, were not as they are now, thanks to continental drifts, collisions and rifting apart.
