Did any female relatives tell you about their experience wearing corsets?

My grandmother was born during the last decade of the 19th century.  She hated wearing corsets because the undergarment restricted her breathing.  Still, at the insistence of my great-grandmother, my grandmother wore corsets to achieve the-then fashionable "hourglass" figure.  My grandmother abandoned the wearing of corsets during the 1920's, when women wore looser-fitting dresses.

  • That is something I never even thought to talk to my grandmothers about.  Your experience talking to your relatives is very interesting!
I have a feeling my Italian grandmother wasn't really into fashion .. more of a homebody.
My English grandma was so skinny .. she'd have no reason to wear a corset.  :) This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at July 30, 2021 1:29 PM MDT

  • As a child I was always interested in what my grandparents and others of my grandparents' generation experienced in life.

No my older female relatives were from the Ukrain  and Ukrainians didn't wear corsets because they made it hard to run away from the Russians. Acually I can not understand why a woman would subject themselfs to so much discomfort and pain.  Cheers and happy weekend! This post was edited by Nanoose at July 30, 2021 2:33 PM MDT

  • Some women subject themselves to discomfort and pain to be in fashion?

Yes. Just look at what damage the wearing of certain types of high heels does to them.

  • I am male.  In my 30's I would wear boots with two-inch heels which were comfortable.  After a few months of wearing the boots I suddenly experienced severe pain in both feet and calves.  I never wore those boots again.

I fail to see the connection.

     (P. S.  I already knew that you’re male.)

  • Women wearing high-heel shoes experience pain, and my wearing boots with two-inch heels resulted in my experiencing pain.  Connection of sorts?

When I was in the Kiss Army I wore boots that had 4 inch soles and 8 inch heels. They didn't cause me pain  but maybe only because I was usally drunk when I wore them. Nowadays I have a bone that sticks out on the side of my foot and sometimes I wonder if it is from wearing the boots. Cheers and happy weekend!!

The reasons for wearing of the two different types of footwear are vastly different. I remarked on high heels specifically in response to your question as to women and fashion versus pain. Your wearing of those boots was analogous only to an extremely narrow extent in that two separate types of people wore two separate types of footwear.

If he was wearing the boots for a fashion statement...it is completely connected.

That’s exactly why I stated that I failed to see the connection; because he didn’t make one when he referred to wearing the boots.

No. The topic has never come up.

  • My parents always said that I was a nosy kid, especially when I asked my grandparents exhaustive questions about their life.  My grandparents were usually grateful that I took such an interest in them.

I have a similarly acute penchant for being overly curious, it’s just that the particular topic of corsets never came up in conversation nor did I ever broach it as a question.
