Can you believe parents still allow kids to go trick or treating and eat the candy strangers give them?

Even if a parent is diligent about inspecting the candy, there could still be something harmful to them in it.

Hehe! I was responding to and laughing at a joke from the attached George Carlin video. I'm American, and incidentally, so was George Carlin.

If you're able to tolerate dark satire, you should watch it. If not, definitely don't! : )

So you think saying to someone their "paranoid to a fault", "watching too much Nancy Grace & her bat crap", "thin skinned" & "chicken little" is throwing a broad net, not specifically directed and not belittling someone?  Oh, that's right, YOUR wording is merely a "window into the level of passion".   I have to admit I know nothing about bat crap but you can try to flower your words up by saying they're a "window into your level of passion"; however, it reeks more like bull sh1t to me.

Don’t care Attitude | Funny Pictures, Quotes, Memes, JokesWhy should I?????   Your opening question is phrased to make parents feel bad and/or minimize their abilities of being a good parent  because they let them go trick or treating.  Your judging them negatively  in a passive-aggressive manner by phrasing it as a question. Based on debunked dangers to boot.

Hell yeah Nancy Grace is bat crap nuts and a fear monger.

My comment is hardly personal.  I know absolutely nothing about you so you're incorrect that I don't like you.  I neither like you nor dislike you and when I'm done making my comment or comments, you won't even enter into my thoughts, because I will move on to something else.   I respond to words on a page, not people. You are correct about one thing though, you SHOULDN'T "care" if someone likes you or dislikes you.  This is the internet.  You should reserve your caring for the people in your "real life".    I ask questions and I answer questions.  I'm not responsible for how others "feel" about what I say, THEY ARE.  I am no more responsible for how they react than they are responsible for how I react.

I hope the next time a stranger walks up to your child and says "Hey pretty little girl, you want some candy?", I sure hope you raised her to speak to strangers and she thanks the nice man.

You're right. There are people who could be sprinkling crack onto candies.

I have never encounter anything that concerned me.  We do buy a bag of candy for the kids to eat that night and we put the rest up for a few days.  We figure if there is an issue it should hit the news within that time.

I did have a cousin that claimed to have found a razorblade in her apple as a kid.  But she was/is also prone to lying and that is what I chalked it up to then and now.

    Hello PC:

Somebody could also have tampered with the stuff you buy off the shelf in the grocery stores..  If I recall, there were some POISONED Tylenol that killed a few people.

As long as the treat is WRAPPED in its original wrapper, it's fine.

It's very true that anything can be tampered with, even off the shelf products.  Thank you.

  • I never had any issues when I took my kids out trick or treating back then. But then again, that was back then.
Although I don't think personally there's that much of a risk, I can understand when some do think there is.
I'm sure that when something happens to you, a little chance becomes a hundred percent to you.

No way I would. Unless I knew the neighbors the kids were trick or treating at.  I mean really KNOW them, not "Oh, Mrs. Applebee seems like such a nice lady!"      I mean I know who they got it from and where they are going and I am with them.

Today is not the same as when I was young.  And when I was a kid, you still had to be careful.   We went in groups at least.  And that bit about it only being done by family members? NO. Not even close.

When I was a kid, they had aholes putting razor blades in apples and this was 1958-1963 era.  It was not any family member of mine either. This post was edited by WM BARR . =ABSOLUTE TRASH at November 2, 2016 9:35 PM MDT

  • Well Sharonna, I'd rather side with caution. It always happens to somebody else until it happens to us...I wouldn't run a sac of stickers thru a Xray machine, but I would definitely check them.

I'm not trusting children to know when something dangerous could happen.  That is my job.

That's kinna how I felt when I asked the question.  I say why take the chance if you don't have to.  It's just as easy buying candy and replacing the candy they got with that.

Can you believe that some people actually know their neighbors and their neighbor's children? And that they only take their kids to those homes, just like when I was a kid. What a shocker that is!

That is exactly what I just said.  But the question was not about people like you and I, S&P.  A lot of parents don't THINK.  This post was edited by WM BARR . =ABSOLUTE TRASH at November 1, 2016 6:34 PM MDT

Some people do know all their neighbors and take their children only to them and there are others that take them to people's houses they don't know.

We always checked over our kids' candy, but I wasn't overly concerned about it. You have to find a balance between appropriate caution and letting fear rule and really interfere with enjoying life, you know?

When it comes right down to it, it's the candy itself that probably poses the most danger to our children's health. Not that there aren't plenty of parents who forbid their children from consuming it entirely... there are.

Personally, I think it's about balance.

I do understand the balancing act parents have to do when it comes to their children and protecting them.  We want them to learn to be responsible and independent but we also want to protect them from potential harm.  Then would you also allow your child to eat a candy bar given to her by a strange man walking down the street?  Sounds like the same thing to me.

But of course! Haven't read that delightful children's book "Strangers Have the Best Candy... and Other Advice for Youngsters"?

I guess what I'm saying is that some people think that all parents who allow their children to play football are irresponsible and foolish. You may be one of them, and that's okay. In all seriousness, though... there are truly horrible parents who completely neglect and abuse their children. I guess that my opinion is that allowing children to eat a reasonable amount of candy that has been checked for tampering, once a year, and scrubbing the hell out of their teeth afterwards, isn't abusive or neglectful.
