There was a corner store in Dartmouth NS that should have been selling nothing but spatulas. I had stopped by there to pick up a few things and a box of cookies. Got home and opened the box and it was full of cockroaches. The whole store, I found out later was infested with bugs and mice.
A few of us from the HMCS Margaree tied up at Norfolk Naval Base were ashore, stopped in to look around in a store near the base, we could not touch anything on display without being screamed at by a floor person "YOU PICKED IT UP, YOU GOT TO BUY IT!!"
No, after a few minutes of us looking around and not buying any of their junky stuff this lady started screaming at us "GET OUT, GET OUT, GET OUT OF HERE!"
That was around 1970. This lady was running around keeping tabs of all the others who were in the store too. Their merchandise was mostly small items on tables so it would be easier to spot anyone trying to pocket something. Sure was some paranoid lady, this gal.
They must have had problems with shoplifters, I guess.
There's a local store that closed a month or so ago, called "Gallery of Diamonds". I jokingly told my friend she should open her a shop there, and change the name to "Gallery of Rhinestones".
This is inspired by Welby’s answer. There used to be a Chinese restaurant down the street from my great aunt and great uncle that was named Mei Dong. That never stopped being funny to my cousins.
