Why would any politican vote to keep foreign nationals on our voter registration rolls?

House Democrats blocked a plan on Thursday that would have required states to remove foreign nationals from their voter rolls.

The amendment, offered by Rep. Rodney Davis (R-IL), would have updated the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 to require states to remove foreign nationals from their voter rolls as part of their regular voter list maintenance program.

In total, 217 House Democrats voted against the amendment.

Thanks.  Unfortunately, without paying for a subscription, I was not able to read the entire article.  However, the question posed is misleading.  These foreign nationals are NOT on our voting rolls.  The proposition hasn't yet been enacted.  Their ability to vote will be for local elections only - not federal elections.  Whether or not I agree with this, these are people who have permanent resident status or current work visas.  They are not illegal aliens.  These people pay taxes just like citizens.  They are residents of a community and believe they should have a say in electing officials to represent them.  Didn't we have the Boston Tea Party as the result of taxation without representation?

Part of the problem is that many states automatically register you to vote when you apply for or renew your driver's license.  However, there is supposed to be a verification system to make sure that the person is actually eligible to vote.   So, if some foreign national winds up on the voter rolls, then someone has not done their job.

"Another important part of the AVR process is how a voter is verified when registering during the AVR process. The first form of verification is a self-verification by the registrant. When registering to vote, an individual must affirm that they are a citizen of the United States (knowingly providing false information could result in a felony). In addition, during the process, new registrants must provide either a state-issued ID or the last four digits of their Social Security number. This information is noted and, in some states, like Colorado, not only is the type of identification presented recorded, but a digital copy of the document is captured and maintained. This information can also be verified by utilizing other sources of information, such as the Social Security Administration or a state department of revenue. Lastly, in some states all registrant information is sent to their local election official’s office, which can provide a final check before the registration is fully entered into the state voter database."
