When someone smiles at me, I smile back.  That does not mean I am interested.  Do guys understand that?

Very good.  At first I thought he might have a spiritual word for me. I still think that is the reason, not any personal interest.

Yep.  Where I worked, smiling was mandatory.  You were (supposed) to smile from the time you came in the front door until the time you walked out of it.  There was one lady who always smiled.  It didn't matter if something was good or bad, she always showed her pearly whites.  When we we're doing inventory at 2 am, she's just beaming away.  When a shelf of tomato sauce fell, she's just smiling away.

Yes, I think I get what you mean. People that are always happy and nice freak me
    out. Too fake.

A guy rented a room in the house next door to me would come out to the backyard and was smiling at me a lot. He came over to introduce himself after a while, just wanted to be friends. After getting to know him better I concluded that he was manic depressive. He also had characteristics of OCD. He was a good neighbor to have anyway.

I've been around people who were creepy and stared.  Meeting them?  That never happened.

The question is specifically about smiling, not staring.

Smiling not staring. I don't have an engagement ring.  My fiancé has not marked his territory.  This post was edited by Honey Dew at December 20, 2021 6:04 AM MST

It sends the wrong message, that I am available. I feel unprotected by social norms.
