Automobiles are supposed to be equipped with crush sensors located strategically around the vehicle, so that anytime one of the "crumple zones" in the vehicle is compressed by an impact, the airbags are automatically actuated.
I have heard that a 35 mph collision is required to deploy airbags.

The car started fishtailing, then began going around in circles and then for some reason went into rollovers. We crashed into the side of mountain on our side. No one else was involved. The car was totaled. Defective airbags or was it due to the nature of the accident? Thank you for your reply CSV! :)

First the car must have to be equipped with Airbags !!!....LOL.
Airbags are inflated by a sensor in the steering column just forward of the steering wheel. An accelerometer triggers the sensor when an impact equal to a hitting a brick wall at 10-15 mph ( 16-24 Kph) occurs.
Sorry to hear that. It was my understanding that significant impact to the front end usually triggers them. I don't know much more than that honestly, never had a reason to.

The airbags in a modern vehicle are controlled by a computer called the SRS (supplemental restraint system) module.
The module uses inputs from various sensors to determine if/when the airbags on the vehicle should deploy. Factors which influence whether the airbags deploy include the speed of the vehicle (as measured by wheel speed sensors), the severity of the impact (as measured by accelerometers), whether or not the seatbelts are buckled (switches in the buckle indicate the state) and whether or not there is someone in the passenger seat (as measured by a pressure sensor in the seat).
My educated guess about your scenario is because the car ended up rolling over sideways, the accelerometers which were designed to detect a FRONTAL impact did not see a large enough deceleration to trigger the airbags. While we have no way of knowing for certain, it is probable that had the airbags fired, it would have made little difference in the injuries you suffered. The airbags in your car were only designed to reduce trauma from frontal impacts, not side impacts or rollover crashes.
Many newer cars are also equipped with side airbags mounted in the doors and "curtain" airbags mounted either in the roof pillars or the vehicle ceiling just above the side windows. Such vehicles have sensors to detect side impacts and rollover conditions and will deploy the side/curtain airbags in such accidents.
No lawsuit Sharonna. Never occurred to u s. We were so thankful to be able to walk away from a totaled car and also that no one else was involved. The car did roll overs to the left across a highway with traffic coming in the other direction. Except that no one did for which we will be forever grateful.
