This is true. That also something that needs addressed. When a person registers to vote, they should be required to prove their citizenship. Not just check the box that claims they are a legal citizen.
But requiring ID when we exercise the right to vote is a vital part of ensuring election integrity.
Most states have started emplementing the "Real ID" program where to get the "real ID," you must prove your citizenship. The real ID is required for entry to any Federal building.
Not racist, but the cost of getting an ID does impact economically disadvantaged people who are often minorities. In my opinion, until government issued ID is free and easily accessible, it amounts to a poll tax. I am not saying that requiring ID is a bad thing, just that we're not there yet.
The fee is $10 here for an ID. If I gave someone $10 because they didn't have it to get an ID, they would complain about not having enough money for a bus.
Australia does NOT require ID to vote. Provided that someone else in the household registered using ID, that person can identify any other household member. I did so for my better half when her ID expired and the new one hadn't arrived by election day. It's not racist, but it could be considered elitist. Many citizens can't read or write, or can't afford a vehicle so do not require a driver's licence.

ID is only required to purchase alcohol or tobacco products if - and only if - the purchaser appears to be under the age of 25 (quite a lot of 16-year-olds can look that old with little effort, or none). I grew a beard in my 20s because I got sick of being carded at the local cricket club - they knew me, I PLAYED for them, they were just messing with me.
When I worked for a convenience store, if a customer was a pain, we were told to make them show their ID for every purchase possible. Tobacco, alcohol, credit card etc.
If it's were republicans requesting such a thing, and I know it was, there are ulterior motives. Looking at those motives, it does seem to make voting that much more difficult. Yet another case of people trying to fix things that aren't broken.
