Not at all.  It does make voting nearly impossible for mountain people who barely subsist.

No racist at all.  In fact assuming, that a minority person is unable to get an valid ID, is racist.

Not all of those things that require ID require proof that you're a citizen.

This is true.  That also something that needs addressed.  When a person registers to vote, they should be required to prove their citizenship.   Not just check the box that claims they are a legal citizen.

But requiring ID when we exercise the  right to vote is a vital part of ensuring election integrity.

Most states have started emplementing the "Real ID" program where to get the "real ID," you must prove your citizenship.   The real ID is required for entry to any Federal building.

What's racist is the blanket assumption that members of minority groups cannot obtain or don't have valid ID.

how would that be racist?   As far as I know, anyone (of any race) can get an ID at a DMV.

Not racist, but the cost of getting an ID does impact economically disadvantaged people who are often minorities. In my opinion,  until government issued ID is free and easily accessible, it amounts to a poll tax. I am not saying that requiring ID is a bad thing, just that we're not there yet.

They are free in my state if you fill out the paper saying it is for voting purposes.

The fee is $10 here for an ID. If I gave someone $10 because they didn't have it to get an ID, they would complain about not having enough money for a bus.

Ours has a fee around $12 but it can be free  if you fill out the form.

Australia does NOT require ID to vote. Provided that someone else in the household registered using ID, that person can identify any other household member. I did so for my better half when her ID expired and the new one hadn't arrived by election day.
It's not racist, but it could be considered elitist. Many citizens can't read or write, or can't afford a vehicle so do not require a driver's licence. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at August 7, 2022 7:05 AM MDT

Ohio offers a state ID for anyone without a driving license. Anyone who can't read or write probably isn't interested in voting anyway.

There are state issued ID....non-driver identification.   My youngest son has one.  My Mom, an Aunt and 2 of my Grandmas had them as well.

Even if you do not drive, an actual ID is required for life sometimes as I listed above.

ID is only required to purchase alcohol or tobacco products if - and only if - the purchaser appears to be under the age of 25 (quite a lot of 16-year-olds can look that old with little effort, or none). I grew a beard in my 20s because I got sick of being carded at the local cricket club - they knew me, I PLAYED for them, they were just messing with me.

When I worked for a convenience store, if a customer was a pain, we were told to make them show their ID for every purchase possible.  Tobacco, alcohol, credit card etc.

If it's were republicans requesting such a thing, and I know it was, there are ulterior motives. Looking at those motives, it does seem to make voting that much more difficult. Yet another case of people trying to fix things that aren't broken.

Then it will not matter that elections security laws are being passed.

Most people believe you should have to verify that you are the voter you are claiming to be.
