When dining out, other than ordering your food, are you the type who doesn’t ask for anything else of the waiter/waitress?

 

For instance, we went out to dinner with an elderly relative who later that evening remarked that there were no condiments on the table, why wasn’t there an option for unsweetened ice tea in addition to sweetened, the air conditioning made the food cold. I asked, “Why didn’t you say anything about those things at the time?” The answer was, “Oh, I never do that, I don’t want to bother anyone. Maybe they were busy.” (Grrrrrrr.)

    If I or the person I'm with needs something, I'll ask.  It is expected by the waiter or waitress, they don't mind at all.  I'm friendly and courteous, not demanding at all and appreciate every single thing.

    What would you do if your dinner companion didn’t speak up until an hour after leaving the restaurant? That’s how it happened in my situation.

    Talk to a server?  On the rare times I have to go out to eat, I hope and pray that the server won't even talk to me.

    If something that would enhance my meal is missing, i.e.. if I'm having a burger and there's no ketchup on the table, I'll request it.  Other than something like that, I am not a nuisance customer.

    Just a thought - it's possible that your relative is from a time when men (or the host) did the ordering and made the requests of the server. She or he might have expected you to notice those issues and communicate them. It may not make sense to you, but it's how things used to be done.

    These servers can only control some things, and one of them is not the a/c. Otherwise, I don't really ask for much. Just a meal from the menu and something to drink. A dessert may follow. Servers have a tough job and I respect and understand that their jobs suck most times.
