Military veterans, do you remember the 1970s-1980s newsletter called “S.S.A.M.”?

The initials stand for Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine. The newsletter was similar to the Stars and Stripes newspaper in many ways, except that instead of being a daily publication, it was either monthly, bi-monthly, or weekly (it’s been way too long; I can’t remember for sure). Another feature that distinguished it from Stars and Stripes was its letters section, or commentary section. Many writers extolled the virtues of their particular branches of service in comparison with the other branches, and staunch opinions that launched arguments were the order of the day. Due to its pre-internet age, the submissions had to be mailed in to the publisher’s offices, so there was lag time between the banter.

Oddly, I never heard of it. We only got Stars and Stripes.
