Were you taught that if you can't say anything nice, you shouldn't say anything at all?

What does that mean to you? Do you you think that it's the right thing to do?

    I learned that as an adult.  I also learned; 1. Have you facts straight. 2. Don't speak unless you have inside knowledge of what is really going on. 3. Don't assume anything especially your own feelings on what you "think" might be right ie. If; I was that person I would do so and so...you are not that person and have no right to judge them based on your own standards. 4. "Handle with care" is invisibly tattooed on the forehead of every person, people don't respond to a bully or a dictator. 5. You can be a positive influence in a gentle way.

      Yes, I believe that or something quite similar was constantly being drummed into my noggin when I was a youngster, but it was confusing, because many of the adults who preached it failed to practice it themselves. 

      A good lesson I learned was: first seek to understand, then seek to be understood, do not try them out of order.

    I asked the question,  because it seems that some members think it's clever or at least OK, to disparage or critique a perfectly acceptable question. I wondered whether they didn't know any better.
