What is going on with the April 8th eclipse?

National Guard deployed
Tx shutting down commercial traffic
Prisons in NY on lockdown
Executive orders in multiple states about emergency services
Warnings to have a full tank of gas, food and possible cell phone outages

The claim is this all because of expectation of heavy traffic and amount of traveling.

Do you know anyone traveling for the eclipse?

My sister lives in the path of the eclipse and she is very excited, trying to talk me into visiting her to view it.It's not my thing, but it seems like a lot of people attach some meaning to it.

No, but I honestly didn't pay attention. My sister wasn't in the path like this year and she's the reason I hear about now..

I was within a few hours drive then and now...and heard none of this type of hype then.

Yes.  Some of my family has already gone up to our vacation home which is reportedly in an area expected to have exceptional view of the event.  I hope that little tiny town doesn't get bombarded.   There is history of heavy traffic associated with these celestial happenings.  My gut tells me there is fear of something else.  Why would they wait until now to start talking about traffic after people have made their plans?

I added more in my answer but I've heard about all the potential "this and that" for almost a year. I live in "the path" of exceptional view.

I'm sure we can agree on the food we'd eat. (And NOT eat, ha!)

Once again, stupidity prevails. I am traveling to my back yard.

I live in "the path" and have heard pretty much everything you mentioned for the last six months, and that's at at the very latest. Perhaps a whole year.
Schools and some local government are closing for the day, too.
We've been told for a half a year to expect possibly hundreds of thousands of people. Encouraged to just stay home because of potential traffic.

I plan to probably stay home. Jobs have been canceled.
I shake my head - - I'm not so excited about the eclipse --

Why am I not overly excited?
Since a young boy, my favorite time of day has always been when the sun goes down/away. And it happens every day.
I can sit outside in the dark all night long, every night, if I wish.

I'm not so excited for three minutes of darkness in the afternoon. Ha.  :)

    In some ways, yes.
I didn't even live in the "ideal" path in that year. This post was edited by WelbyQuentin at April 7, 2024 1:28 AM MDT

ordered glasses for the whole family, 6 months ago, to beat the rush.  They are the same ones NASA uses, not sure if they are better but it makes me feel more secure.

What did the snowman say right after drinking a cup of hot tea?

Many people are traveling to witness the eclipse.  We have been told to gas-up, have food and expect a lot of traffic.  The airport in the next town is having an eclipse party-get-together.  You must live in another country, a long way to go to see it.
