How far can a person or group go before being charged with election interference?

https://progress2028.com/

https://www.opensecrets.org/news/2024/10/pro-trump-dark-money-network-tied-to-elon-musk-behind-fake-pro-harris-campaign-scheme/

A dark money group with ties to Elon Musk has set up a phony,  but almost credible website purporting to support Kamala Harris and making exaggerated and false statements about policies.  The are calling it Progress 2028. We all know politicians are creative with the truth, but is this a step too far?

Please check both links for more information. The first link is the phony web site. The second is information about where it came from.

I'm curious to know how this qualifies at a 501(c)(3) non-profit.

    • a section 501 (c) (3) organization may not make a contribution to a political organization described in section 527 (such as a candidate committee, political party committee or political action committee (PAC)).

    I replied before confirming.

    PACs are 527s not 501c.

So whose 501c status are you questioning?

That organization is not tied to Progress2028.com nor any group that is connected to Elon Musk.

OpenSecrets looks at themselves as a whistle-blower about money in politics.

What m2c said. Open Secrets is the organization that has exposed this propaganda and identified where it gets its funding.

I give up.  Open Secrets' own website calls itself a 501(c)(3).  I believe that designation is for charitable organizations (DAV, VFW St. Jude, etc.).  I don't believe Open Secrets fall in that category, but what the heck do I know?

I get what you're asking now. Here is what I found : A 501( 3)(c ) can be educational, instructing the public. There are limits on political activity, and I am not an expert on what qualifies. I didn't even notice the designation but I know Open Secrets has a lot of articles about Dark Money,  which is absolutely in the public interest.

So a guy whose wealth was built on apartheid-era child slave labour is shady? Who would a thunk it?

The progress 2028 sounds like Kamala's policies.

The only thing questionable is her current position on benefits given to non citizens.   Her website doesn't address it at all. And she has certainly supported giving non citizens benefits in the past.

It's written to influence low-information voters or those who have a fairly superficial grasp of her policies and want to believe the worst.

Again the only thing questionable about the listed policies is the benefits to noncitizens.   But truly given the number of noncitizens she has flown in using their app and given protective status, I don't consider those policies as too far from the mark

Especially after dodging the question during the Fox interview..
