Why is it suddenly a surprise to some people that politicians mislead, exaggerate, embellish, and otherwise twist the truth? Politicians of all parties have been doing this since we began having elections. Voters who pay attention to what is going on make their choice on facts, not stump speeches.
One of the problems I can see is that it's becoming more difficult to suss out the truth. Media and social media are as much of a problem as the candidates themselves and foreign actors attempting to misinform us plays into things. The days of Walter Cronkite and being able to believe every word that he says are over.
