Should self identified non citizens be removed from voter registration?

In a state that does not allow illegals to vote in local elections.

Federal Biden appointed, Judge Patricia Tolliver Giles, orders that 1,600 SELF-IDENTIFIED NON-CITIZENS removed from Virginia's voter rolls by Gov. Youngkin "have their voting rights restored" and be returned to the voting rolls.

A federal election law bans states from removing voters from voter rolls 90 days before an election, otherwise known as a “quiet period.”  The judge made her ruling in accordance with federal law.  It does not appear that the judge had a choice but to rule in accordance with federal law.  Whether or not that state allows non-citizens to vote in local elections does not matter.

They should never have been on the registry to start with.   Ridiculous to not allow them to be removed.

If I was the governor I would make clear any noncitizen who decides to vote, will be charged with voter fraud and any other laws that could apply.   And whoever is in charge of maintaining the voter registry should be fired and also charged as well.

So, it's ridiculous for a judge to follow federal law?

It is ridiculous for self admitted non citizens to be on the voter registration of any state.
It is ridiculous that the Biden/Kamala DOJ brought a lawsuit to keep non citizens on the registry.

What part of FEDERAL LAW to you not understand?  Judges rule on based on the laws as they exist - not as you would like them to be.

They should have never been on the registry to start with....they are NOT Americans.    And we should be allowed to remove any Non Citizen from the voting registry any time it is discovered they are on it.

These people do not claim to be Americans.   They are not being disenfranchised....they have NO right to vote that needed restored.

In case you noticed, I deleted my response to you. Apparently, responses mean that I am obligated to engage in a debate whether I want to or not.

SCOTUS just ruled and they can remove noncitizens.  The protection does not apply to noncitizens.

I researched a bit after reading your question.
In general, yes, I agree with you.

But there are details - - many of the people have become naturalized citizens and the timing of when they declared themselves "non-citizens" and in meantime became "naturalized citizens."- - stuff like that.

I read one article that at least 18 of the 1600 were wrongly included in the list as non-citizens.

And Jane S  and Spunky brought up points that I, too, read.

They should not have registered to vote before they became naturalized citizens.   As soon as it was done and official then they should have filed their registration paperwork.
But it is a requirement to be a citizen to register to vote.  And it would be illegal to register if they were not at the time.

Now, I do think they should have notified any one on the list to be removed for non citizenship,  so if there is an error it can be corrected.  Even on election day, they should be allowed to bring proper documents to prove their citizenship.

Again, I know I'm no expert on politics and I admit the whole political area is one I would not be good at.
But, yes --  I agree that citizens are the people who get to vote.

If that has changed somehow over the years, I missed it.

(Though I also admit I may have missed details on how people may become naturalized citizens over time, too, who then should get to vote, too.)

There are actually states and localities who let illegals and noncitizens vote in their elections.  Makes no sense to me.   It is illegal for noncitizens to vote in any Federal Election regardless of the state or local laws.

I agree that citizens are the ones who should get to vote.
If non-citizens would like to vote, then the 'right to vote' could be an incentive for them to go through the process of becoming a citizen.

( I admit I may be  unfamiliar with all the processes themselves.)

It certainly could be a reason to become a citizen.
SCOTUS just ruled the noncitizens can be removed.

Firstly, quit calling all non-citizens "illegals", most non-citizen residents of the USA are there legally - pay their taxes, obey the laws, hold a valid visa/green card etc.
Secondly, Federal Law - Gov Youngkin has had YEARS to initiate this action, deciding to do it pretty much on the eve of an election smells highly. At least 18 people would have been illegally disenfranchised had it gone ahead, it's certain more would have been identified in the washup. Throwing out the baby with the bathwater is never appropriate, you MUST allow sufficient time for those wrongfully identified as non-cits to appeal, hence the 90 day deadline.

He has been requesting information from the DHS for years.  But they should never have been placed on the rolls to start with...whoever is in charge of that should be fired. These people should have been notified they would not be registered until they documented that they are citizens.

He needs to continue his executive order after the election as well.

Governor needs to announce that non citizens are not allowed to vote in Virginia and any who do will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. This post was edited by my2cents at October 28, 2024 6:48 AM MDT

Giving the citizens wrongfully removed sufficient cause to move to impeach. If they're not lynched first.

Voter protections do not apply to noncitizens.
Gov also sent notification to each registrant with citizenship questions,  and instructions to bring their documents.

This is America...we do not lynch justices.  This post was edited by my2cents at November 3, 2024 5:19 AM MST
