Do you prefer using the word “dock” or the word “pier”? What’s the difference between them?

I might prefer "dock" because I really like listening to Otis Redding when he sat on the dock of the bay.

The difference is that I don't recall Otis on a pier.

“Sittin’ on the Pier of the Bay” just doesn’t do it, right? I agree with you.

We had a pier in my home state of Alabama.  Here in Florida, we have a dock.  Same thing.  Maybe we'll have a wharf at the next stop.  This post was edited by Thriftymaid at April 15, 2025 7:28 AM MDT

    Where I live.
A dock is a flat walk way that you park your boat next to in the lake/river.
A pier is a post that is in the water. The dock maybe next to piers or even on top of the piers.
