Wishing everyone a very happy international Steelpan Day. August 11, 2026.

World Steelpan Day is celebrated annually on August 11. Proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in July 2023, this international day honors the steelpan—the national musical instrument of Trinidad and Tobago and the only acoustic musical instrument invented in the 20th century.

    I've always enjoyed the sound of the steelpan, whether solo or as part of an ensemble.

    I was in the Beatles Museum in Liverpool yesterday and I learned that Harold Adolphus Phillips (a steelpan player and Calysonian, known professionally as Lord Woodbine) played a brief but important role in promoting and mentoring the Beatles in their pre-Apple years, and even shared a stage with them at their first Hamburg performance.
