One person; Shirley came over to my house, plopped down on my "new" expensive couch and broke the base due to her size, Grrrrrrrrrr.

A similar thing happened last year when a family acquaintance had bought a new car and was giving someone a ride home. The passenger was heavyset, and plopped into the passenger seat, tried to adjust the backrest by merely leaning/thrusting backwards into it forcefully, but it had automated controls that required just pushing a button for adjustments. The entire mechanism broke, and the owner was hopping mad.

The person who broke it is living on Social Security, has no money to pay for the damage, and the insurance policy doesn’t cover it.

It's a really difficult situation.  Never have come across the situation again, not sure what I'd do.  I said nothing last time, it didn't do either one of us any good by staying quiet.

Yes, years and years ago. I remember that for some strange reason, a lot of people would mistakenly call her Cheryl when first meeting her, and it always irked her. “My name is Shirley, not Cheryl! (Grrrrrrrr.)”

You missed a glaring error in one of my questions. Must be old age.

Yes, it is most likely due to your advanced age. (Cough, cough.)

All of the Shirleys I knew changed their names so they could be serious.

I had a girlfriend named Shirley. I saw her get hit by a pick-up truck that killed her.

Was it like she was daffy and cross the street while high on a hot summer day? This post was edited by CosmicWunderkind at October 28, 2026 10:27 PM MDT

Close to it. She was high and walking down the side of the road and got hit from the rear.
