Why were American Indians called Indians, since they were not from India but from America?

    According to the 'grade school' history I was taught, it was because Columbus thought he had arrived in India and thought that they really were Indians.

    Good thing he didn't think that he arrived in Turkey.

    He was in the Bahamas but he thought he was in the East Indies so he called them Indians and I guess Indian just kind of stuck for the original people who lived in the Americas.

    He got just a little bit lost on that trip.
