If it's that good, how come it's not that well-known? I could understand that in the 1960s because there was too much good music around for it all to be commercially successful, but in the 1990s it was different. The charts, for the most part, offered a choice between dance music and indie music (neither of which sends me into realms of esctasy), so that anything outstandingly good that didn't fit either of those generic terms was very likely to be a hit for the plain and simple reason that it stood out in a crowd. Does that make sense to you, Old School?
@AndyB -- I have long given up trying to figure out what makes songs popular or why musical tastes evolve in the way they do.
Also, I recognize I am in small minority of people who prefer music without lyrics, so my tastes are very different from the bulk of the population.
As for your assertion there was "too much good music" in the 1960s, I think you have no basis for it. Instead, what I think has happened is all the bad music from the 1960s has faded into obscurity and all you are aware of is what survived the brutal judgement of Sturgeon's Law ("90% of everything is crap").
No, I am perfectly aware of all the good music from the 1960s, so much so that I could write a book on it and it would have about 2000 pages. If I wrote a book about the bad music from the 1960s it wouldn't even have 200 pages. My own personal collection alone would be enough basis to say that there was too much good music in the 1960s for it all to be successful, and my collection is nothing compared with my friend Dave's. Lol:)
Lots of instrumentals have been hits over the years, so that comment is neither here nor there. I could easily make a compilation disc called "Instrumental Gold" and all the tracks on it would be popular and well-remembered. Here are three of my favourite instrumentals which all prove that music doesn't have to have lyrics to be totally excellent:
Mhmm. Had it the same way, which is why I said I'm not even sure to have my top three included. I had to look some of them up as I didn't recalled if it was the 80's, 90's or the 00's. I hope you like/enjoy most of them. :-)
Too many to make it only one... And, even then they aren't even representative... Anyway, enjoy those of us who likes it... A little snapshot of a few of them...
Nirvana, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" (1991)
Garbage, "Queer" (1995)
Oasis, "Wonderwall" (1995)
Daft Punk, "Around the World" (1997)
Sophie B. Hawkins, "Damn I Wish I Was Your Lover" (1992)
And so many more... So many I haven't even mentioned...
