Can't the U.S president talk to anyone he wants without permission from China but on the other hand what if the Communist Republic of China

opened dialogue with remnants of the Old Confederacy or bolstered any U.S state attempt to secede?

  • I always thought that he/she could talk to anyone they pleased. I still don't see what the big deal was. China will talk to anyone they please and hack all our systems anyway. Many countries would love to stir internal trouble in the States. I doubt anything would come of it though. I think the U.S. President should be able to talk to anyone at anytime.

    Hello, O:

It's NOT a matter of permission..  It's a matter of not upsetting the apple cart..  You don't NEED permission to walk into your boss's office and tell him HOW to run his company, but it's gonna UPSET the apple cart..

Look..  These kinda things sometimes don't make much sense, but they ARE things we ALL observe, because we don't wanna upset the apple cart..  Now, SOME people WANT Trump to upset the apple cart.  But, his apple cart is full of NUKES instead of apples.

  • We can all do what we wish without permission, but certain people, as a function of their jobs, are advised - or they should be.  This aspect of the presidency (the 'Trump Knows Best 'cos He's Rich' policy) has always to my mind been the one with most potential for disaster.

Trump has just pissed all over the last 20 years of US-Chinese relations.  Nations expect other nations to behave in a certain way - at the very least acknowledging their claims, if not agreeing with them.  The US has not had any contact with Taiwan for a long time and this is part of an agreement, which China insists on.  It's a fairly simple one.

China won't deal with anyone who recognises Taiwan.  That's all there is to it.  Trump's acceptance of a telephone call will be viewed in Beijing by some as an overt provocation.  The People's Republic of China has no compunction about using force if it seems the best way to go for them.  In recent years they had made huge strides getting a peaceful solution over the Taiwan issue, and Trump's ignorance and narcissism may put that at risk.

And there will inevitably be some comeback.  As you note in your question, how many US government officials would be happy if China suddenly started conversing with anti-Union groups in the US?

I think we're all in for an interesting few years.
