  • Nope.   This isn't a meritocracy and the concept of meritocracy has way too many flaws in logic to switch to one.
No body should be excluded from running  OR voting.  Period. This post was edited by Benedict Arnold at December 14, 2016 11:00 AM MST

There are Constitutional requirements to which we should gladly follow, but other than those, no other restrictions.

  • Well yes.  I will and do accept the logical requirement that anyone running be a natural born citizen.

So it isn't as absolute as my comment had implied I am on this.

  • Interesting point ... I just read an article on how Socrates hated democracy ... The reason being that he believed people should earn the right to vote by first contributing to society and second being educated enough to understand what they were doing ... On the surface it would appear to have merit ... And maybe have been the final nail in the coffin of a certain pet

  • Oh yes, he was very critical of true democracy even though he supported some aspects and ideal of it.
That said though,  true democracy doesn't really exist anywhere and there are some good reason as to why not.

Anyone who is eligible per the Constitution can and should continue to be allowed to run for president.

Well, before Trump was allowed to run, I would have said the same thing, Bozette.  However, I gave the American populous far to much credit when it came to sane choices.   I think there should be a battery of tests before anyone can run.   We have to take a test to drive for godsakes.

What tests, Sharonna?  Who decides what a candidate needs to pass and with what scoring?  The answers to to those questions would be subjective and vary widely.  If such testing were ever instituted it could - and absolutely would - easily be used by politicians to corrupt the process. You may feel Trump is incompetent, others do not.  I am not ready to back changing the Constitution based upon your feelings about Trump.

Not a thing, Sharonna.  Though I imagine having Trump up yours is getting rather uncomfortable.  Lol

  • Subjective.   The opposing side can say the same for you, boz, and me.   There's no objective measure.

Taking a test to make sure they have all their marbles wouldn't be a bad idea, and absolutely no Rap stars or football players who can't carry on a conversation. Ya know  what I'm sayin?
