That was a hit before I was born, SapphicHeart. As far as I know it's the only Christmas song to enter the charts in June. It's 60 years old now. Sadly, all of the original members of the Goons are now deceased. One of them was Peter Sellers, who later found further fame as the hilarious Inspector Clouseau in the "Pink Panther" movies. The Goons had another hit with another novelty song, called "The Ying Tong Song".
The other two on the songs were Harry Secombe and Spike Milligan. Michael Bentine was the fourth Goon, but apparently he wasn't on those records. Harry Secombe later became a more serious singer and had hits with conventional ballads like "If I Ruled The World".
Thanks for the compliment, Sapphic. Although I'm not the type to brag about myself, I am well-known in my social circle for my knowledge of music, especially oldies. I guess that's what comes of being a record collector for more than 40 years. Lol:)
Those Goons songs were hits in the 1950s, Welby. I hadn't yet been born. However, the "Ying Tong Song" charted again as a reissue when I was 11, and I do remember it being a hit second time around. :)
Oh. It has its depressing sound, but at the same time strangely giving goosebumps at times. I do think I'll save it for a single playlist and not add it to my overall Christmas playlist. Hope you don't mind. Thank you for sharing and letting us know yet another touching song. Merry Christmas.
