What is Obsessive Compulsive disorder?

How can the disorder affect a persons life?  What should they do about it?

  • OCD is a type of anxiety disorder. It definitely can affect a person's life in that the obsession part of the disorder, let's say being afraid of germs or getting sick...causes the compulsion to constantly wash hands, or wash hands 10 times to be germ free....or the fear that the monster under the bed will come out at night if one doesn't turn the light on and off for a specific number of times....for some people, this can be very problematic. As far as what to do, I think deep on the severity of the disorder..treating the underlying anxiety would be where I would start.

No, it's CDO, not OCD. Any person suffering from that illness would insist that the letters be in the correct alphabetical order!

One symptom:  Can't control his or her thoughts or behaviors, even when those thoughts or behaviors are recognized as excessive.

Donald Trump unpresidential behavior in the use of twitter and his constant statements of a fake news media, towards anything he considers detrimental to him, possibly places him with symptoms of that disorder.

He should seek professional help. This post was edited by Beans/SilentGeneration at January 14, 2017 6:16 PM MST

It's one of several types of anxiety disorders. Obsessive thinking about something combined with compulsive behaviors in an attempt (conscious or unconscious) to alleviate the obsessive thoughts.

Lots of people talk about being or having OCD, but in order to actually be a disorder, the obsessive thoughts/compulsive behaviors must interfere with their daily lives to a certain degree.

Treatment consists of psychotherapy, usually combined with medication. Sadly, stigma often prevents people from getting professional help.
