Is Canada a real country?

I mean . .

I know their Police moves about in horses, wearing those funny looking red outfits.

I know they say aboot and eh a lot.

That they watch a lot of hockey and curling.

I know that it is always winter there and that there's only one big main long road across the place.

I know they put mayonnaise and maple syrup on everything, and that some people speak French, . .or English. . .or French and English. . . Or Arabic, French, and English...

Oh, and Justin Beiber. . .and Rush. . .and Lumberjacks. .. and the.Queen, what's.the deal with the Queen?. . .of England that is. . .

But . . I mean. . Do they have . .. an Army and stuff?

  • In 1996 Canada won the 4x100m relay, defeating the US. In an interview after the race one of the Canadians said that he had hear the Americans discussing whether they should let Carl Lewis run in the team to get his tenth gold medal. He said, "They thought they were so good they could win with or without Lewis. So we went out and showed them."

Now I know your question is tongue-in-cheek but that's the story that sprang immediately to mind when I read it. Even so, Lewis was a hell of an athlete. Amazing man.

  • So basically you're saying the Americans let them win, yes?

  • Lago, I used to be the publicity officer for a football club and part of my job was to write a weekly news sheet. One year at presentation day they gave me a giant paddle as a reward for being the club's champion stirrer. I think you'r better qualified for it than I was. I'll email it across. :)

  • I live in Canada.
Some people here are like the stereotypical Canadians playing hockey, curling etc.but mostly it's pretty normal up here. We get all the American tv, movies, music plus our own.
We do have Universal Healthcare which is nice.
I don't play hockey or curl or say aboot.
    I do say eh sometimes.
I don't like Maple syrup much.
I do like Crown Royal rye whiskey that's made in Canada.
I mix it with American Coca Cola Classic.
I like Canada Dry Ginger Ale too.
We have an Army and Airforce etc.
We just don't have as many people as the US.
We have more land it's just colder up here so less people want to stay here, but the ones who do enjoy it.
    I like it, it's home. : )

  • You know?
That's one thing that really surprised me. The population numbers.
I knew that you guys had less people, but then I read that Canada's population is about 35 million people!!!
Compared to the 300 million plus that they have in the U.S...or the 65 million in the.UK. . .
I felt the same looking at the 25 million Australians!!
I didn't know the discrepancy would be so large especially when you look at Canada's size. I wonder about the reasons for that.
That's a cool list Workinprogress, thank you for taking the time to write all that.

Dont trust Mercator projection maps. The longtitude lines are not really parallel, they go all the way to the pole and meet there with zero distance between them.

Antarktis arent all that big either ;-))

  • I kind a had a feeling that the lines meeting at the.poles where not parallel.
But im not getting what you are trying to say. Are you saying that cans is not as big as it looks like?

Precisely. Mercator maps make it look a lot wider (and taller) than it is because it is close to the pole where the distortion is greatest.

Greenland is 836,300 square miles in area.
Europe is 3,931,000 square miles in area.

But judging from the mercator map I posted Greenland is clearly bigger than Europe instead of 70 percent smaller ;-))
