What's your pet hate about politicians? (Let's keep this one out of D.C.)

I once saw video of an Australian Prime Minister kissing babies. It's gotta be one of the most insincere things they can do as they grovel for votes. What turns YOU off?

  • When they justify things with " If it saves just one life it's worth it" or " Think about the children"( same goes when they put children weighing in on an issue).

Both those things are complete hogwash and a clear sign they are trying to sell you horse pies.

  • Oh, yeah. And a related red herring: "This will create jobs."

  • That's another one.   The two I gave though are far worse IMHO because it's trying to play on peoples emotions and scare them. Plus saving one life really isn't worth it.  Sorry but it isn't in a population of millions+.   The other is trying to imply someone doesn't care about children which is crap too.

This will create jobs is up there for sure.

  • I think it was Krushchev who said, "When one person dies it's a tragedy; when a million die it's a statistic."

Glad handing.  I just want to wipe those fake smiles off their faces with my foot.

An example: When they make a pre-arranged stop in a small town.  Go into a local dive (restaurant), ensuring camera crews are there, eat a burger & fries (or pie, or whatever the specialty of the house is) and then exclaim how they ALWAYS make sure to stop into this place when they are in town (never) because they are great people, the food is great, the locals are great, and it's just really nice to take a break from a grueling campaign and be around regular folks.  This is where they are most comfortable and can relax.  All of this while their assistant holds their business suit jacket & the politician still wearing his expensive suit pants & gucci shoes, rolls his sleeves up, pretending he is just like Joe Schmo who is sitting on the stool next to him, wearing dirty overalls & smelling like manure.

  • Because they don't want to be stuck with that name themselves?

  • Absolutely, Harry. It's as phoney as hell. Like most people I've rubbed up against a few of them. They just LOVE to be recognised.

I'm not too keen on politicians. That's the main reason I like Trump. Because he's not a proper (classic) politician.

  • When they portray themselves as just a regular guy. Every election we get the same group of guys that grew up in a farm, or the guy whose grandfather swam from Cuba with nothing but a smashed up banana in his pocket . . . a wet smashed up banana.

  • Must be a local stereotype. We don't get the same sort of thing over here. Mind you, it'd be a bloody long swim from Cuba to Oz. :)
